In an effort to organize gig worker participation, the Ministry of Labour & Employment in a recent notification dated September 16, 2024 has outlined the process for registration of aggregators and gig workers employed by such aggregators.
Aggregators are digital intermediaries or a marketplace for a buyer or user of a service to connect with the seller or the service provider, as per the definition in the Code of Social Security, 2020. Gig works are participants outside the employer-employee relationship.
Aggregators include those who render ride sharing services, food and grocery delivery services, logistic services, e-Market services, professional services provider healthcare, travel and hospitality, content and media services, and any other goods and services provider platform, are requested to register themselves and the platform workers in the eShram portal (“the Portal”). The detailed process is outlined in the notification.
The eShram portal is a space launched in August 2021 as a repository for the country’s unorganized/migrant workers. The process notified, while enabling availability of more accurate data on gig-workers to the Government, is also expected to make the access to social security benefits for gig workers easy.
